The word Repent means “to change one’s mind.” God created man with the ability and freedom to think, to understand, to reason and to choose. But God’s desire was that even in this freedom; man should completely depend on God, and obey Him in love. But when the first man Adam who completely loved, believed and depended on God, changed his mind and turned from God and believed the lie of Satan, that was the first ‘repentance’.  When Adam ‘repented’; as God had warned him, he lost the life of God and moved from the dominion of God to the dominion of the Satan.

Therefore real repentance is when a man hears the true gospel, and his eyes are opened and he realizes that he is sinner and a slave of Satan and turns his mind towards God to be saved. Adam repented from the dependence on God to independence from God, therefore the real repentance is from independence of God to dependence on God. The real proof of repentance is a life of continuous dependence on God.

In repentance, there can be emotional feelings, however; real repentance is not mere emotional but a definite change of mind.When a person repents towards God, His sins will be wiped away.

Acts 3:19 now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

When he believes in God, as promised, God’s Holy Spirit comes inside and seals him. He receives eternal life and becomes a child of God.

Ephesians 1:13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit

Thus a person is permanently transferred from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to kingdom of God.

Colossians 1: 12 Thanks unto the Father, who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love
